Technology is such a big part of all our lives and nonprofits need the resources to utilize that technology. With the right technology your organization can further the mission, call others to action and communicate your success. But it takes a bit of savvy to keep up with all the information out there. We hope that these resources will help your organization to make a greater impact in the communities you serve. We will add new resoruces whenever we find them, so check back for updates. Free online assistance in managing technology. " A Complete Integrated On-Line Library for Nonprofits and For profits". Beginning with this Homepage, "All About Computers, Internet and Web" there is advice for beginners and the more advanced computer searchers. A good source for beginners.

A free website that offers help in understanding computer technology with clear pictures and helpful language for the beginner. A Question and Answer format. Carries current articles on new technology. (Click on "computer" button at the left of the page.)

A free website that offers various explanations to technology questions with advice in every aspect if web technology. This website discribes itself as "a not-for-profit consulting firm that helps environmental groups connect with people." Offering a rounded explanation of how to create change through technology.

A free web that offers materials from previous technology classes and workshops. In addition, there are links to other technology resources on the web. One helpful tool is A Basic Guide to Technology Planning.

Microsoft Technology Small business articles

Microsoft offers many useful articles and tips to help you with technology for your nonprofit.

Npower is a network that offers techology files for use by nonprofits in PDF form. Two areas of information covered: Selecting the Right Technology Vendor or a Technology Guide for Nonprofit Leaders: Education Services.

Techsoup - Learning Center is a webpage that offers how-to's on subjects such as Technology Planning, Using the Internet, Databases and other areas of importance.

Getting the Software

Tech Soup www.techsoup.org

A website assisting nonprofits in advancing technology use. They offer greatly reduced prices for software, some refurbished hardware and lots of advice. The information on the site is free, you must be a Tech Soup member to buy discounted items. To join you must be a 501 (c) (3) organization and go through a fairly simple process. Once approved, you may purchase items in the section labeled "Tech Soup Stock".

This webpage offers information on how to evaluate your needs for software with several sites links to discounted software.The full site has vast information on issues of importance to nonprofit practice as well.

Ebase www.ebase.org 

This website offers a free database that can apply to a Macintosh or PC. There is a fee to join the site however. To join, go the the "membership" tab at the top of the home page.

 

Getting the Hardware

Tip: Did you know that many for-profit business replace their computers every 2 to 3 years and are willing to donate the used (but still quite usable) hardware? Consider which business you have already established a relationship with and talk with them about their change out cycle and making a donation.

Tip: When considering purchasing printers for your computers, try to buy ones that all use the same ink cartridge. You will be able to buy in bulk (maybe saving some money) and avoid running out of ink for one printer while having plenty for another.

An organization that offers discounted refurbished computers. This webpage is a direct list of the prices of the systems with information on how to contact Share.

U.S. Administration www.computersforlearning.gov This Federal program donates used computers to organization such as schools and nonprofits that work with grades K to 12 with the purpose of assisting in education students in computer technology.

Getting On the Web (Website Hosting)

 Tip: There are many for- profit web hosting companies available, some that will give discounts to nonprofits. Take the time to shop around and see what packages they can offer you including design templates, domain registration, e mail and tech support. You will likely pay a start up fee and a monthly or annual fee. If the cost is prohibitive for your organization, consider asking a sponsor to pay the cost and be sure to thank them on the site.

Verizon Foundation http://foundation.verizon.com Assists with web hosting for nonprofits.

 Getting help with Technology Funding

Community Collaborative Fund of the California Consumer Protection Foundation www.consumerfdn.org Grant opportunities for nonprofits and public organizations with a focus on the underserved communities in California, with the purpose of increasing access to telecommunication services.

The Community Technology Foundation of California www.zerodivide.org Grants to organizations who increase equal access of telecommunication services to California's underserved populations.

California Teleconnect Fund www.cpuc.ca.gov/static/telco/public+programs/ctf On this site you can download an application to receive funding to pay for your internet service. If you apply and are granted the discount, the CTF pay your internet provider to continue to provide service to you at no charge to you organization. For information on how to apply and qualify go to the website.

The California Endowment /www.calendow.org/grant_guide Assists organization by granting funds to benefit the health and well being of Californians.
